The Herrenchiemsee castle, the most pompous of the three castles built by Ludwig II, lies at the heart of the Herrenchiemsee island. We reach this with a 45 minute boat ride over the lake. Once on the island it is a short walk to the castle, which was based on the palace of Versailles and, with its splendid halls, is hardly inferior to it.

Even if the fairy-tale prince himself only lived here for 10 days, it demonstrates his fascination for the Sun King, Louis the XIV of France, and the French baroque style. The fountains in the park at the front of the castle are particularly beautiful in the summer.

The boat returns to Prien or, if desired, to the adjacent island of Frauenchiemsee. This particularly idyllic small island with its fishing village houses a living convent of the Benedictine order dating from the 9th century.

Excellent fish restaurants around lake Chiemsee offer the chance for a romantic evening meal before starting the trip back to your hotel.
